Driver arrested as woman dies and girl injured in crash | UK | News

An accident involving two cars that resulted in the death of a woman is now considered an incident. murder, police to say. The collision occurred on the B4696 near Royal Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire on the evening of June 30 and also injured a girl. Wiltshire Police said the incident involved an orange Peugeot 107 traveling northbound and a black Vauxhall Astra heading southbound.

It was determined that the female driver of the Peugeot, in her 70s, died at the scene. Locally she is known as Barbara Mullaney, who is said to have run a pet shop in Cricklade. A teenage girl who was a passenger in the Vauxhall was seriously injured in the collision and was taken to hospital, where she remained.

Police said the 43-year-old driver of the Vauxhall was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. The person, who was taken to the hospital for treatment after the collision, was detained for questioning.

They said: “It’s hard to believe that such a smart, cheerful, funny, caring and kind person could be accepted in the most cruel, mindless circumstances.”

Det Ch Insp Phil Walker, who is leading the investigation, confirmed the collision is now being treated as a murder investigation and the suspect has been re-arrested on suspicion of murder.

He added: “My thoughts are with the victim’s family and everyone who knew him. His relatives have been informed of this latest development in the investigation and they continue to be supported by specially trained police officers.

“I appreciate that this update may heighten community concern, but please be assured there is no risk to the wider public and we are working to piece together the events leading up to this tragic incident.”

DCI Walker said police would like to hear from any witnesses or anyone who may have dashcam footage from the area at the time of the collision.

He also appealed for any witnesses with dashcam footage of a black Vauxhall Astra from Cricklade High Street, Purton High Street and surrounding areas dated June 30 to get in touch.
