DSA dismisses Israel-Hamas ceasefire, calls for resistance to occupation

The Democratic Socialists of America, the political party that includes New York City Mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, scrapped Israel’s ceasefire with Hamas on Monday and called for more resistance to Israel’s “apartheid and occupation” in Gaza.
DSA published a statement on its website titled “Until the Liberation of Palestine”, declaring that they “have no illusions that Israel will honor any negotiated agreement that protects Palestinian life or the right to self-determination.” The statement made no mention of the release of Israeli hostages from Hamas captivity and accused Israel of “terrorizing” the Palestinian people and nations in the region.
“This will not end Israel’s aggression against the Palestinian people or the theft and occupation of Palestinian land. A conditional ceasefire agreement cannot wash the hands of the ruling class,” DSA said. he wrote.
The statement continued: “The Occupied West Bank and Jerusalem, eroded under illegal settler expansion, continue to struggle under Israel’s violent apartheid and occupation. Israel uses the veiled threat of nuclear strike to violently impose its fascist, expansionist ambitions, while terrorizing the people of Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Qatar and Iran throughout the region.”

Mamdani’s statement about the ceasefire repeated allegations of “occupation and apartheid” against Israel, prompting swift criticism from both his rivals in the mayoral race and New York City officials.
Mamdani wrote in a statement on
“We must work for a future built on justice, without occupation and apartheid, and for a world where everyone can live in security and dignity,” he added.

New York City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov, who is Jewish, lashed out at Mamdani shortly after, calling her statement “word salad” and noting that there was no mention of Hamas or its crimes.
Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is running against Mamdani for mayor, noted how long it took the Democratic socialist candidate to address the ceasefire.

“His silence speaks volumes,” Cuomo wrote in the hours between the release of the surviving hostages and Mamdani’s final statement.

The view comes as Mamdani’s husband, Rama Duwaji, also found himself at the center of criticism on Monday after publicly mourning the death of a Palestinian social media influencer who had praised Hamas’ actions on October 7.

The man, Saleh al-Jafaravi, was killed this weekend as Hamas clashed with its rivals in Gaza following the withdrawal of the Israeli army.
