E-bikes seized and seven charges laid amid police crackdown

A Sydney teenager faces seven charges after allegedly leading police on an e-bike chase.
On Friday evening, a police officer tried to stop a 17-year-old boy from illegally riding an electric road bike on the Northern Beaches.
Police allege the boy did not follow instructions and “got into the car in a dangerous manner to avoid police.”
He was arrested a short time later and charged with seven offenses at Sutherland Police Station.
The man, who has been granted bail, will appear in Children’s Court within two weeks to face a number of charges including careless driving, evading police, driving without a license or helmet and driving without registration and insurance.
The incident was part of a larger, multi-agency crackdown as part of ‘Operation E-Voltage’ which operated in the Sutherland Shire on Friday.
“The operation focused on disrupting and reducing the illegal and dangerous use of inappropriate e-bikes and associated anti-social behaviour, particularly among young people,” NSW Police said.
While 4 e-bikes were seized during the operation, 3 people were arrested.

The crackdown also resulted in fewer than 100 traffic citations and warnings, eight transportation violations, a dozen person searches and 11 action orders.
“Officers also focused on improving community safety through education and engagement,” according to NSW Police.
