EasyJet flight forced into emergency landing: ‘something we shouldn’t have in the hold’ | World | News

An easyJet flight bound for Luton was forced to make an emergency landing miles from its destination. Passengers on flight EZY2618 from Hurghada to Luton experienced a chilling moment on May 19 when the captain announced: “There’s something in the hold that we shouldn’t be in.”

One passenger claimed the 180 people on board were not given further details about the problem, which caused the plane to be diverted until landing. The plane landed safely in Rome Fiumicino at 23.30 on Tuesday. A woman later allegedly told the flight attendant about the power bank found in her checked luggage, causing the pilots to divert the flight due to safety risks.

Stranded passengers were placed in hotels or slept in the terminal; easyJet arranged a new flight to the UK, departing at 14:00 the next day.

Passengers on the diverted flight included Paul Casterton, 57, who was traveling with his partner Laura Bartlett, 61.

He said the following about the frightening incident: Sun: “No one knew what to think. Suddenly the plane changed direction and began to descend. It was hard not to fear the worst.”

Mr Casterton described the remainder of the flight until landing as “stressful”.

He added: “Thankfully it wasn’t a bomb in the hold. Word spread of the real reason for our diversion. It was quite an ordeal but for the most part I was relieved that everyone was okay.”
