easyJet flight to Manchester declares mid-air emergency on approach to runway | UK | News
An EasyJet flight declared an emergency as it approached Manchester Airport. Passengers were completing their short journey from Amsterdam yesterday when the Airbus A320-200 crew raised an alarm in the air and the plane entered a holding pattern.
According to flight tracking data, the pilot of easyJet flight U22164 departing from Schiphol Airport deviated from the standard approach to Manchester Airport and circled north of the city. About an hour after takeoff, the crew declared an emergency as they prepared to land in Manchester, Air Live reported.
Typically, an alert code of 7700 is transmitted to alert air traffic control of an onboard emergency. This gives aircraft landing priority and allows emergency services to be positioned on the ground.
It acts as a general emergency code and therefore does not indicate the specific nature of the problem on board. It serves as a “catch-all” for any emergency scenario other than smuggling (7500) or radio failure (7600).
Following the emergency alert, the aircraft was diverted directly onto the approach path and landed safely on Manchester Airport Runway 05R without further incident.
After touring the airport, he landed at 15.05, 45 minutes behind the planned arrival time of 14.20.
An easyJet spokesperson said: “Flight EZY2164 from Amsterdam to Manchester requested priority landing upon arrival in Manchester on 15 July due to a technical issue.
“As a precaution and in accordance with standard operating procedures, the aircraft landed normally and passengers disembarked as usual. The safety of our customers and crew is always easyJet’s top priority.”
