The research was carried out by Costa Coffee ahead of the chain’s launch, which has teamed up with McVitie’s Jaffa Cakes for a ready-to-drink frappe with a chocolate orange flavour.

A spokesperson said of the results: “Some pairings strike the perfect balance between familiarity and exploration.

“Coffee and chocolate orange are a great example, combining two flavors people already know and love in a way that is both comforting and exciting.”

29% of adults faced with unfamiliar combinations said they would only try it if it was free, while 26% said they would consider trying something new before making their usual choice.

43 percent of survey respondents admitted that the best food combinations are the ones you think would never work.

A spokesperson for Costa Coffee said: “We’re delighted to see coffee and chocolate orange recognized as one of the country’s best-loved flavor combinations.

“While some of the pairings in the study may have divided opinion, it is a pairing that feels instantly familiar and enjoyable.

“As consumers continue to seek out flavors that offer both comfort and a sense of discovery, we are excited to bring together two iconic brands in a beverage that celebrates exactly that.”
