Three of those injured are students at Royal Holloway University in London. A university spokesman said there was “no ongoing threat” and that “medical teams” would be on hand to provide support.
A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm (GBH) and is in police custody.
A spokesman for Royal Holloway University of London said: “We are aware of an incident at Egham railway station last night in which three of our students were injured. Police have arrested a suspect and confirmed there is no ongoing threat. Our teams have provided support to the students involved in the incident last night and will continue to do so.”
“Out of respect for those involved and the ongoing investigation, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.
“Our health teams are ready to support any student if they have concerns and we encourage people to monitor Surrey Police and British Transport Police channels for further updates rather than relying on unverified sources.”
BTP described the incident as “serious” but said the incident was “isolated”.
BTP Detective Superintendent David Udomhiaye said: “We are aware of the concerns of local people and whilst this is of course an incredibly serious incident, I can confirm that thankfully no one was fatally injured. This is being treated as an isolated incident involving two groups of people at the station who we believe did not know each other.”
An investigation is ongoing to determine the incident. The Mirror has contacted BTP for an update.
DS Udomhiaye, who appealed for witnesses to come forward, added that “a cordon is still in place”.
DS Udomhiaye said: “Officers have been working throughout the night with partners to establish what happened. A cordon remains in place and we are grateful for the patience and understanding of local people while this important work is completed. “We are working with Network Rail partners to try to keep disruption to a minimum.
“Finally, I would urge anyone with information that could help us to come forward. There will be witnesses who have not yet spoken to us and I would urge anyone who may have vehicle or doorbell camera footage in the area to contact them as soon as possible. There will be an increased police presence in the area over the coming days and anyone with concerns or information can speak to these officers or text 61016.”
Anyone with information that could help police should text BTP to 61016 or call 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 682 of 6 February. Information can be made anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
