President Donald Trump acknowledged Tuesday night that Democrats’ up and down picks in the nationwide vote are bad news for the Republican Party.
“Last night, you know, it wasn’t expected to be a victory, it was a very Democratic district, but I don’t think that’s good for Republicans,” Trump said during a breakfast meeting with GOP senators at the White House on Wednesday morning. he said.
“I’m not sure this is good for anyone,” Trump said.
“But we had an interesting evening, we learned a lot and we will talk about it,” he added.
The remarks came hours after Democratic candidates Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill scored resounding victories in their respective gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey; Both were expected to achieve double-digit margins of victory.
Democratic New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani also defeated her main rival, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who was supported by Trump.
Democrat Jay Jones, who is running for Virginia attorney general, also defeated his incumbent opponent and overcame a major scandal over texts he sent musing about violence against a Republican political foe in 2022.
Trump’s first reaction to the election results, which came in Tuesday night as the results were still coming in, was to claim that his party was underperforming because it wasn’t on the ballot.
“According to pollsters, THE TWO REASONS REPUBLICANS ARE LOOSING THE ELECTION TONIGHT IS BECAUSE TRUMP IS NOT IN THE VOTE COUNT AND HE IS SHUT DOWN,” Trump wrote. Real Social post. He did not link to these surveys.
Trump’s reference to what is now the longest government shutdown in US history suggests he believes this is a political liability for the GOP.
In follow-up posts, Trump reiterated his latest demand that top Republicans take action to eliminate the Senate filibuster, which requires 60 votes rather than a simple majority to pass most legislation.
Republican leaders have long opposed taking this step, known as the “nuclear option,” out of fear that future Democratic congressional majorities would use that power aggressively.
But Trump wants them to nuke fraud to quickly end the shutdown and enact more of the president’s policy agenda, including sweeping changes to federal voting laws.
He emphasized this view at breakfast on Wednesday morning.
“If you don’t end banditry, you will be in bad shape. We will not pass any law,” he said.
Trump will fly to Miami, Florida, to give a speech about the economy later Wednesday.
