Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday, January 25, 2026, said institutions like the Election Commission of India (ECI) have been facing constant pressure in recent times and hence it is “our responsibility” to preserve their independence so that democracy not only survives but truly thrives.

He said usurpation of the “right to vote” through “voting chorus” and unplanned SIR would tarnish India’s long-cherished democracy.

In a post X On National Voters Day, Mr. Kharge said the day is a powerful reminder that the future of a nation belongs to its people and our collective voice can shape our common destiny.

“The people of India deserve free, fair and fearless elections, where clean voter lists and level playing field are prime requirements,” the Congress chief said.

Mr. Kharge said usurpation of the “Right to Vote” through Vote Chori and unscheduled Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has tarnished India’s long-cherished democracy.

“In recent times, our institutions like the Election Commission of India have faced constant pressure. Therefore, it is our solemn responsibility to protect their independence and integrity so that Democracy not only survives but truly thrives,” he said.

The Election Commission was established on January 25, 1950, a day before India became a republic. This day has been celebrated as National Voters Day for the last 16 years.
