Electric Boat says Crystal Mall closure coming as defense contractor takes over space

WATERFORD- General Dynamics Electric Boat announced Monday that most activities at Crystal Mall will end March 31, but a “few” remaining tenants will remain open after that date.

“The vast majority of tenants have vacated the mall,” company spokeswoman Myra Lee said Monday. “The few remaining tenants will continue to operate on Electric Boat accommodation after March 31 to support specific business needs.”

March 31 “is the target date when the majority of remaining tenants will move out,” Lee said. Electric Boat worked with tenants on a case-by-case basis because they all had different leases and certain business needs that we were trying to meet for them.”

The company said it plans to use the space to expand its engineering, training and software development activities for the production of Columbia and Virginia-class submarines. Lee said Monday that the Waterford Planning and Zoning Commission approved the company’s request for an amended site plan
and last week’s new special permit to change land and building use from retail to commercial activities.

“Electric Boat continues to work with the town on investments that will improve traffic flow, aesthetics and other aspects of the location,” he said.

Lee said the company is working on developing a design for the mall.

“The first phase of design development for the mall will be completed this spring, followed by renovations, starting with the former Macy’s location,” Lee said.
