Elissa Slotkin says SAVE America Act would make it ‘hard for any Democrat’ to win an election

Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., said the Protecting American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE) America Act would make it harder for Democrats to win elections, leading Republicans to eventually claim Democrats are saying “the quiet part out loud” about their opposition to stricter election laws.

Slotkin made the remarks in a video recently unearthed by Breitbart News, recorded a day after the Senate narrowly rejected the RELIEVE America Act in June. The bill failed 50-48 after four Republicans voted against it along with Democrats.

The SAVE America Act became one of the biggest legislative fights in Congress, and President Donald Trump made its transition a top priority. Trump refused to sign the housing bill on Friday in protest of Congress’ failure to pass the RELIEVE America Act.

In a June 6 speech to the Democratic Party in Indiana, Slotkin celebrated the Senate’s rejection of the SAVE America Act and claimed that the bill would allow the Trump administration to “rig our democracy.”

“It would be difficult for any Democrat in any state to win any election,” Slotkin said of the SAVE America Act.

Slotkin did not explain how the bill would hurt Democratic politicians.

The SAVE America Act would require documented proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote and photo identification to vote in federal elections, and would require states to take additional steps to remove noncitizens from voter rolls.

Trump has argued for months that Democrats oppose the RELIEVE America Act because it would do just that. It’s harder to “cheat” in electionsHe claims the party benefited politically from weak voter verification measures and the votes of people who were not eligible to vote.

But the Center for Election Innovation and Research, a nonprofit election policy group that describes itself as nonpartisan, found that voter registration by noncitizens is rare.

“By the same logic, no married woman in America can fill out an I-9 form; every American must do so when starting a new job,” Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, wrote in X on Tuesday. “This is ridiculous. This shows why we need to pass the SAVE America Act.”

In the video, Slotkin also accused Trump of trying to federalize elections and pointed to an unsigned draft executive order drafted after the 2020 election that suggested using the National Guard to seize voting machines. The order was never signed or executed.

The White House rejected Slotkin’s claims that Save America would hurt Democrats.

“If securing elections in America (with common-sense methods like voter ID and proof of citizenship) would make it impossible for Democrats to win elections, perhaps they should reconsider the methods they use to ‘win,'” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told Fox News Digital. he said.
