Elizabeth Warren reacts live to Trump saying he won’t sign housing bill

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) appeared puzzled Wednesday when asked why President Trump chose to abort signing the bipartisan housing bill that easily cleared both houses of Congress.

Warren, who along with Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) was a driving factor in the bill’s passage, said during an appearance on CNBC: “I’m sorry, if you’re asking me to get into Donald Trump’s head and figure out what’s going on there, you need someone else.”squealing in the street.”

“I just have no idea. This doesn’t make any sense other than what he wants to do. This is complete indifference to the cost squeeze on American families and genuine efforts to do something about it,” he added.

The bill passed with overwhelming support, clearing the House 358-32 and the Senate 85-5.

It limits the number of single-family homes that large institutional investors and private equity firms can buy, creates a $200 million annual Innovation Fund to reward regions that increase housing supply, and provides pilot programs and grants to help local governments convert vacant commercial properties into affordable housing units.

In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, the president said the bill would not be signed until lawmakers pass his preferred election reform bill; This law is a measure that overhauls voting requirements to ensure that individuals must present proof of citizenship and photo identification to vote.

“Today’s Housing News Conference and Signings are canceled until we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider a National Emergency,” Trump wrote in his Truth Social post.

The president is scheduled to meet with Senate Republicans at the Capitol on Wednesday.

Warren said Trump’s last-minute cancellation showed he didn’t care about American working-class families.

“You know, he may be trying to claim a victory lap here and instead say no, no, he had nothing to do with it,” the Massachusetts senator told CNBC.

“Because he doesn’t really care about American families and he doesn’t care about the fact that prices are going up and his day one promises to reduce costs have fallen through, prices are higher on groceries, prices are higher on healthcare, prices on just about everything Americans buy are higher because of Donald Trump’s policies,” he added.

Scott did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment.

Shortly after Trump’s post, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said he would move to pass the SAVE America Act through a budget reconciliation package, but the Senate parliamentarian said earlier this year that the measure did not meet the threshold for passage with only a 50-vote majority.
