Embattled Victorian Liberal MP Moira Deeming dumped by party
Victorian MP Moira Deeming has been rejected by the Liberal Party State Executive at the next state election after failing to apologize for allegations she made about a party member.
The State Administration on Friday night revoked Ms. Deeming’s approval for the first position in the West Metro Area.
“The Liberal Party would like to thank Moira for her service to the Liberal Party,” a spokesman said.
“The Liberal Party considers the matter resolved and we look forward to continuing to outline our plan to deliver the fresh start Victoria needs ahead of the November election.”
The party needed a 75 per cent majority to unanimously accept Ms Deeming, The Australian newspaper reported.
A statement issued by Ms Deeming this week said she withdrew the injunction after providing the State Government with a statement and offer to mediate to resolve the matter.
“Having all the evidence before them, the State Administration can now decide whether to continue mediation or reconvene to disapprove me,” he said.
“I was abroad and ill when the story broke, jet-lagged and in poor health when the decertification meeting was called, the precaution gave me time to regroup, review all the facts, learn the difference between a headlock and a collar-and-tie hold, and gather my thoughts.”
Ms Deeming filed a police report alleging Matthew Guy subdued her at an event in Sunshine West on May 23.
The police, who investigated the complaint, determined that no crime was detected after reviewing the footage of the incident.
Opposition Leader Jess Wilson canceled a meeting with Ms Deeming after she refused to apologize to Mr Guy.
“Jess Wilson and Matthew Guy have asked for an unconditional apology. Moira Deeming has made a statement saying she is not willing to apologize. Therefore, there will be no meeting between Jess Wilson and Moira Deeming,” Liberal Party legal affairs spokesman James Newbury said at the time.
“The party is currently working on its next step.”
Following the police investigation, Ms Deeming issued a statement through her lawyer last month, saying she had misunderstood the term subjugation and had acted in good faith in describing what happened.
