Engineer at UK airport suffers horrific injuries after ’35ft plunge’ from Jet2 plane | UK | News

An eyewitness said that the engineer who fell 10 meters from a passenger plane at Manchester Airport today was “lucky to survive”. The worker, estimated to be in his 60s, jumped out of the rear left door of the Jet2 plane at around 8:05 in the morning.
It is believed that he broke both legs, fractured both elbows, dislocated his shoulder, and fractured both eye sockets. The witness, who works at the airport, told the Sun: “We were told the steps were to the right, which they were, but he misread and thought they were to the left. As he opened the door he realized there were no steps there and tried to hold on to the door. But the winds were quite strong and strong, pulling him out face first. He stuck his knees and arms out to stop the impact of the fall, which caused him injuries.” The witness added: “We didn’t realize how bad the injuries were at the time. “The fall from the plane was about 35ft so he’s lucky to be alive.
“When we realized how serious his injuries were there were six or seven ambulances and fire trucks there.
“So we removed him with medical screens and let the paramedics do their job.
“At one point they were performing CPR on him on the tarmac, then at around 9.20am they took him to Manchester Royal Infirmary.
“We learned from his friends that he is currently in surgery. He has two fractures in his legs, both elbows are broken, his shoulder is dislocated.”
“In addition, both eye sockets were fractured, which caused a lot of swelling in the brain.”
On the tarmac at Manchester Airport, several paramedic vehicles and ambulances from the North West Ambulance Service were seen surrounding the plane.
The plane was supposed to fly to Tenerife before the incident occurred.
A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) said: “We were called at 08.22am to reports that someone had fallen from a height.
“A male patient was taken to hospital for treatment of suspected serious injuries.”
Jet2 said it was investigating the incident, which involved an individual working for a third-party company.
A spokesman for the airline said: “We are aware of an incident at Manchester Airport this morning involving an individual from a third party provider.
“We cannot confirm any further details at this time, but we can confirm that a full investigation has been launched. We are doing our best to provide support to anyone who needs it.”
A representative from Manchester Airport confirmed ambulances had arrived at the scene.
