England coaches involved in furious touchline scrap as Jarell Quansah is shown a RED card in chaotic World Cup clash in Mexico

Jarell Quansah was shown a straight red card as England coaches got into a fight with their Mexican counterparts during the World Cup last 16 match in Mexico City.

England’s right-back was involved in a challenge early in the second half and when no foul was called, both teams’ coaches found themselves embroiled in a touchline brawl.

England assistant Anthony Barry was among those trapped on the Mexico bench on the touchline, moments before Quansah’s foul was assessed by a VAR review as tempers rose.

A lot of things have gone right for England up to this point; The two Jude Bellinghams scored 98 seconds apart to give them a 2-0 lead at halftime, and Mexico scored a goal just before halftime.

But tensions escalated for more than five minutes in the second half when Quansah’s rash challenge was initially rejected by the referee.

At the other end, England’s Anthony Gordon was recklessly and cynically fouled and all hell broke loose on the touchline.

Daily Mail Sport reporters broadcasting live from the Azteca Stadium saw Barry in the middle of a touchline row as he defended his colleagues and England’s players in one of the most tense atmospheres of the World Cup.

Quansah was devastated to be shown a straight red card, but England refused to be shaken as they went down to 10 men.

Within minutes they had struck what looked like a knockout blow of their own when Gordon was fouled in the penalty area and captain Harry Kane converted from the penalty spot, as he did in the first group game against Croatia, to make it 3-1.

But the drama would not end there, as Mexico soon received its own punishment.

This time, Kane was at fault, cutting the foot of Mexican Brian Gutierrez and again, as he did not give a real-time foul, he was referred to VAR and after the review, a penalty decision was given.

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford pounced in the right direction but Wolves striker Raul Jimenez converted the pressure penalty just before the second-half hydration break to make it 3-2.
