England fans across UK devastated as World Cup journey ends in emotional rollercoaster
England fans were left heartbroken after the Three Lions were eliminated from the World Cup with a 2-1 defeat to Argentina.
The euphoria that followed after Anthony Gordon put England ahead just 10 minutes into the second half ended when Enzo Fernandez equalized in the 85th minute and was further soured when Martinez put Argentina ahead in the 92nd minute.
This came after a tense game at Atlanta Stadium in Georgia, filled with fouls and tempers flaring.
Fans were left disappointed after England failed to maintain their lead at the Boxpark at Wembley in north London. Pictures show fans with their heads in their hands watching as their team once again failed to get a chance of advancing past the semi-final stage.
The Prince of Wales, who directed the messages to the England team, said that he was “gutted” but “proud” of Thomas Tuchel’s men.
“They are gutted. England, you gave it your all and we are all so proud of you,” William wrote on Instagram.
“Thank you to everyone on and off the field for an incredible tournament. The fight and belief you showed inspired us all. The most complete England team in a tournament. Keep your heads up.”
Sir Keir Starmer also said he was “gutted” but praised the team’s “passion and energy”.
“It wasn’t the result we all hoped for tonight but the England team did their best,” he said. “The passion and energy they showed while representing the badge made us all proud.”

Fans were quick to criticize Tuchel’s management for making defensive substitutions when England took the lead and left them behind after Argentina scored two successive goals.
One wrote to X: “England manager Tuchel must definitely take the blame for this defeat.” “Poor tactical decision-making. After defending, Gordon decided to score. I can’t expect England to defend uncompromisingly for 30 minutes. It completely changed the momentum of the game.”
