England rejected Australia A warm-up down under ahead of the Ashes: Report

Adelaide: England passed up the chance to face Australia A at a major venue – potentially a lively Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) ground – opting instead to focus on the shortened Ashes tour schedule, leaving them 0-2 with three Tests remaining, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

More than a year ago, during pre-tour discussions, Cricket Australia offered England the routine opportunity to play the Australia A team ahead of the first Test in Perth. However, England opted to fly directly to Perth for an internal trial match instead.

This decision was partly influenced by the fact that, ahead of the Tests, most players were already on the east coast of Australia following a white-ball tour of New Zealand, and also by the fact that England routinely avoid official warm-up matches during the “Basball” period.
England’s pre-tour negotiations were overseen by then director of cricket operations Stuart Hooper, a former Bath rugby player and official who left the ECB earlier this year after emerging as a key figure behind the league leaving Rugby360.

The New Zealand tour was planned as part of the Future Tours Program in mid-2022, shortly after men’s managing director Rob Key and coach Brendon McCullum took over leadership of the England structure. Key was responsible for bringing Hooper aboard.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, a report published in England this week revealed that England want a dedicated training block at the WACA Ground, similar to what India got last summer. However, due to the Sheffield Shield match scheduled for that week, their request was rejected and they were instead offered a club ground at Lilac Hill or Adelaide.
England and Wales Cricket Board officials are reportedly keen to create a detailed memorandum of understanding for the next two Ashes series in 2027 and 2029-30, ensuring touring teams have adequate preparation time, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. Australian cricket authorities have indicated they are open to providing England with more comprehensive preparations for future Ashes tours, provided Australia receives the same treatment on their tour of the United Kingdom. Cricket Australia has yet to receive official communication from the ECB regarding warm-up plans for the upcoming Ashes series but has confirmed it is open to discussions.

In the ongoing Ashes series, Australia lead 2-0 despite a weak team missing Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood. England’s struggles have been worsened by the loss of fast bowler Mark Wood, who is sidelined with recurring knee problems.

The third Ashes Test is scheduled to begin on December 17 at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide.
