Ethan Suplee’s rollercoaster weight loss journey after he lost 21 stone following years of yo-yo dieting – as My Name Is Earl star celebrates his 50th birthday

He is best known for his role as Randy in the American sitcom My Name Is Earl.

But these days, Ethan Suplee is dedicated to promoting a healthy lifestyle and targeting America’s obesity crisis.

Ethan, who just turned 50,At the age of 23, she tipped the scales at 550 lbs (39th) and after years of yo-yo dieting, she has consistently managed to maintain the weight and now weighs around 260 lbs (18.5).

Detailing the constant physical pain he experienced during his heaviest moments, he said: ‘It was really disturbing for me. I was in hell. I was unhappy. I wasn’t comfortable. There was never a day when I was physically comfortable.

‘It was difficult to breathe, it was difficult to walk, I had to extend my seat belt. For a long time there was this feeling of ‘leave me alone, I want the world to change around me’, then I had this conversation and said ‘this will never happen’.’

But the journey wasn’t easy, and Ethan went up and down from 400lbs to lows of 220lbs over the decades.

With the extreme weight loss came the challenge of dealing with loose skin, which left her feeling like she had ‘an apron around my belly’ and led to two skin removal surgeries.

Learning that there is no ‘perfect body’, Ethan is forced to confront how he looks in ways that only provide a limited amount of satisfaction.

My Name Is Earl star Ethan Suplee’s rollercoaster weight loss journey after losing 21 stone from 400lbs to 220lbs following years of yo-yo dieting as he celebrates his 50th birthday

To talk Men’s Health she said last June: ‘The idea of having a body that looks the way I want it, I think it doesn’t exist.’

Ethan, who has been unknown since his time on My Name Is Earl from 2005 to 2009, began losing weight after the show ended, and by the time he appeared on the red carpet to promote the movie Unstoppable in 2010, he had lost more than 200lbs.

In an interview with the Daily Mail last year, Ethan said Jim Caviezel motivated him to make a life-changing decision to lose weight.

Ethan explained that he was sitting next to The Passion Of The Christ star on the plane and ‘during the conversation he held up a mirror to me and said ‘you don’t even realize your situation and situation’.”

Giving Ethan some hard truths, Jim went on to tell him: ‘You’re going to end up in hell and you should really take a look at yourself.’

Reflecting on the conversation, Ethan said: ‘I spoke to a man and left very embarrassed and upset about it at the time.

‘But looking back, I’m so grateful that he had this conversation with me because it was part of the fire that sent me down this path.’

Taking a moment to look at his life and reflect, Ethan began asking himself a series of questions: ‘What do I want from my life? Do I want to relax? Do I want to feel physically comfortable at any point?

‘Don’t I want to have to worry about having a washcloth in my pocket to wipe the sweat off my face?

‘Don’t I want to have to worry about having two t-shirts on so the amount of sweat I produce doesn’t run off and is visible to everyone?

‘Don’t I want to have to get to every airport like 3 hours early because it takes too long to get from security to the gate?’

The star, who admitted that she suffered before losing weight, explained that she equated this feeling with 'being in hell' and that it was love that helped save her.

Ethan added that his great love for his wife, Brandy Lewis, and their children also inspired him to make this change, and admitted that his relationship would not have survived if he had not changed his life.

Pushing his body through the years of transformation, he ran a full marathon on the rowing machine, deadlifted 405 pounds on the bench press, and in 2019, he reduced his body fat by nine percent and had a clear view of his abs.

Most importantly, he is a healthier man for his family and can run with his grandchildren.

But the road to weight loss was not easy and it did not solve all his problems as he thought.

Ethan also struggled with alcohol and drug addiction before losing the weight, and explained that his food addiction was similar.

But unlike drugs and alcohol, food is something you can’t give up.

‘You can’t be abstinent when it comes to food and so I’ve been desperately looking for quick fixes forever, ‘just don’t eat carbs because if it’s the carb’s fault and it has nothing to do with me’.’

Explaining how he eventually changed his perspective and maintained his weight loss, he said: ‘I realized that it actually had nothing to do with food, it was all my behavior, my obligations, my habits.

‘Just like I used drugs and alcohol to calm myself, I was also using food to calm myself.’

She added: ‘Eating a properly balanced diet isn’t easy and it never will be, but it’s not as hard as it was the first day and that’s good.’

Ethan has had a tumultuous journey with weight loss as well as skin reduction surgery.

The actor said he was demoralized by how loose his skin remained after losing weight and he didn’t even think it would be a problem.

She recalled: ‘I’m smoother but nothing tighter’ and added that the area around my stomach ‘looked like an intestine under my clothes’.

Ethan had his first excess skin removal surgery in 2008; Skin was removed from her abdomen, hips, waist and hips.

But the recovery process was long, and in hindsight the star admitted he wasn’t physically or mentally ready for the surgery.

Ethan lost a large amount of blood during the initial procedure and had six blood transfusions.

Later, after surgery, she fell while walking around and split her side in half, but due to the risk of infection the surgeon was unable to stitch it back together and instead was subjected to wound grafting and heavy antibiotics for five months.

Two years later, after gaining back 400 pounds, Ethan started cycling and extreme dieting and lost 180 pounds.

However, once again, large pieces of skin remained on his chest and sides, so a second skin removal was performed in 2012.

Luckily this time it was much easier and she recovered in six weeks, but her weight yo-yoed again, reaching 400 lbs again in 2016.

But Ethan marks 2018 as the year his life changed forever.

Determined to end his diet’s cycle of highs and lows, Ethan focused and chose a more sustainable approach rather than following fad diets or extreme exercise.

‘That’s where I really realized how I was going to live the rest of my life,’ he said.

In her last fitness update in February, the star admitted that the key is consistency and understanding that there is no end point.

He wrote: ‘Diet, exercise, health, they all seem to beg the same thing. A quiet daily turn. No waiting for graduation, no long sailing afterward. I can only learn to love repetition.

‘Some days this awareness tires me out. But the only real finish line is the last one, and I’m in no rush to get there. So… Happy Friday. We’re still in this together.’
