Russia warns US of Tomahawk escalation in Ukraine war

The Kremlin stated that Russia is deeply concerned about the possibility of the United States supplying Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine and warned that the war has reached a dramatic moment with escalation from all sides.
US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he wanted to know what Ukraine planned to do with the Tomahawks before agreeing to provide them because he did not want to escalate the war between Russia and Ukraine.
But he said he had “sort of made up his mind” on the matter.
I just spoke with @POTUS – for the second time in two days – and today’s conversation was also very productive. Yesterday, we agreed on a number of issues that we will discuss today and covered all aspects of the situation: defense of life in our country, strengthening of our country… pic.twitter.com/ZVs0cLicIL— Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський (@ZelenskyyUa) October 12, 2025
Tomahawk missiles have a range of 2500 km, which means Ukraine can use them for long-range strikes deep into Russia, including Moscow.
Some retired variants of Tomahawks can carry nuclear warheads, according to the US Congressional Research Service.
“The Tomahawks issue is extremely worrying,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian state television reporter Pavel Zarubin in a statement broadcast Sunday.
“It’s a really dramatic moment right now in terms of escalating tensions in every direction.”
Peskov said that if Tomahawks were launched against Russia, the Kremlin should take into account that some versions of the missile could carry a nuclear warhead.
“Imagine: A long-range missile has been launched and is flying, and we know it could be nuclear. What should the Russian Federation think? How should Russia react? Military experts abroad should understand this,” Peskov said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier this month that it was impossible to use Tomahawks without the direct involvement of US military personnel, and therefore the supply of such missiles to Ukraine would trigger a “qualitatively new phase of escalation”.
The Financial Times reported on Sunday that the United States has been helping Ukraine launch long-range attacks on Russian energy facilities for months.
The FT said US intelligence helped officials in Kiev shape route planning, altitude, timing and mission decisions, allowing Ukraine’s long-range, one-way attack drones to evade Russian air defences.
Zelenskiy told Fox News on Sunday that Ukraine would use Tomahawk missiles only to achieve military objectives rather than attack civilians in Russia.
