EuroMillions winner dies after suspected hit-and-run in Essex | Essex

A lottery winner is dead following a suspicious hit-and-run in Essex, police say.

Police were called to a collision between a cyclist and a black Ford Ka in Tiptree at 6.30am on May 21. Essex police said the cyclist, in his 30s, was taken to hospital and died four days later.

The man in question is understood to be key worker Anthony Canty, who helped save the life of a police officer who suffered a heart attack during the first Covid-19 lockdown. Weeks later, in May 2020, Canty won £1 million in the EuroMillions draw.

Police added that an 18-year-old man was initially arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and neglecting to stop.

The investigation against him is ongoing and investigations continue.

While Canty was hospitalized in a serious condition, it was claimed that the suspect fled the scene on Maldon Road after the incident.

In April 2020, Canty performed CPR on the officer who passed out on the bus. The officer was airlifted to hospital and spent five days in intensive care.

Canty said at the time that the officer stayed in touch with his partner while he was in the hospital, dropping off fruit and flowers and staying in touch after he recovered.

The water supply worker from Maldon won the EuroMillions prize with his partner Katie Sullivan. Canty had promised not to give up his day job.

Police said they wanted to hear from anyone who saw or had footage of a black Ford Ka car driving in the area at the time of the collision on May 21.

Anyone with information, CCTV, dashcam or other footage is encouraged to contact Essex police.
