Why are these fires so bad?
Each wildfire is complex and unique and is influenced by many factors, including land management, terrain, and firefighting resources. But scientists say extreme weather conditions made worse by climate change are the main cause of fires in Europe.
Global warming is causing stronger fluctuations between wet and dry extremes. Matthew Jones, an independent research fellow at the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia in England, said it was a “bullwhip effect”.
