Agriculture Remains Top Employer in Telangana

Hyderabad: In Telangana, about 41.5 percent of workers are engaged in agriculture; this rate is slightly less than 43.2 percent nationally. The share of employment in industries in Telangana is 22.2 per cent, slightly lower than the All India figure of 24 per cent.

In comparison, the services sector accounts for 36.3 per cent of employment in the state, higher than the national average of 32.8 per cent, according to the Telangana Socio-Economic Survey 2026.

According to the Quarterly Bulletin of Periodic Labor Force Survey (PLFS) (October-December 2025), comparison of sectoral employment distribution between Telangana and All India reveals notable differences between rural and urban areas.

In rural areas, agriculture accounts for 62.6 per cent of employment in Telangana, while the national figure is 58.5 per cent; The industrial sector employs 17.7 percent of workers in Telangana as against 20.9 percent in the country. While the share of the services sector in employment is 19.7 percent throughout the country, this rate is 20.6 percent.

In urban areas, the services sector has a higher employment share in Telangana at 64.9 percent compared to 61.9 percent at the national level, while industry is 30.2 percent in Telangana and 31.5 percent at the national level. Agriculture accounts for a marginal share of urban employment in Telangana at 4.9 per cent; this rate is slightly lower than the national level of 6.7 percent.
