Ex–Soccer Chief In World Cup Kiss Scandal Is Egged At Book Launch: ‘It Was My Uncle…’

November 14 (Reuters) – Former Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales said an egg was thrown at him during a book launch in Madrid on Thursday and the attack was carried out by his uncle.
Rubiales, 48, was promoting his new book “Matar a Rubiales” (Killing Rubiales) in the Espacio Eventize media room in Madrid when someone in the audience started throwing eggs.
“He was my uncle, my blood uncle, he was a troublemaker and always was,” Rubiales told Radio MARCA. “He came with some eggs and threw them at me but I didn’t know what he had in his hand and when I saw him rush in I thought he was carrying a gun.”
In February, Spain’s Supreme Court found Rubiales guilty of sexual assault for kissing forward Jenni Hermoso without her consent during Spain’s 2023 Women’s World Cup victory celebrations in Sydney.
He was fined more than 10,000 euros ($11,662) and given a three-year ban by world football’s governing body FIFA.
The incident sparked nationwide outrage over sexism in Spanish society and women’s football, and gave momentum to the “Me Too” movement in the country.
