Met Office issues flood warning in 9 areas with 11cm set to fall – full list | Weather | News
The Met Office has issued flood warnings for today and tomorrow in nine parts of Scotland. The weather agency warned that up to 110mm of rain could fall on the worst-hit areas in the west and, combined with rising temperatures, this could increase the risk of flooding as accumulated snow begins to melt.
A yellow rain alert has been issued for five areas in northern Scotland until 10am tomorrow, with the agency warning that “heavy rain and snowmelt will bring the possibility of some flooding”. Four areas in south-west Scotland have been issued a yellow rain warning until midnight on January 11, risking possible travel disruption and “some flooding”.
In the north-west, 40-60mm of rain could fall over a fairly wide area across the warning area, although 80-110mm could fall on Skye, Lochaber, Argyll and the Trossachs.
Precipitation may initially fall as snow and turn into rain as the day progresses. The Met Office has warned that rain and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and road closures, as well as possible delays or cancellations of train and bus services.
He warned there was a “small chance” some homes and businesses could be flooded and some communities could be cut off due to flooded roads. Power outages may also occur.
A separate alert in south-west Scotland warned of “heavy rain” with 30-50mm likely to fall over warning areas, with up to 70-90mm falling over higher elevations in Dumfries and Galloway.
Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) flood duty manager David Morgan said the risk of flooding was greatest in Dumfries and Galloway and in the west and north of Scotland.
He added: “Possible impacts may include flooding affecting parts of communities, low lying land, transport infrastructure and individual properties. Driving conditions will be very difficult at times.”
The next few days could mark the end of a severe cold spell in the UK as low pressure pushes warm air from the Atlantic.
Temperature forecasts by WXCharts predict the south of England will reach 11C by midday tomorrow, while the north could reach between 5C and 10C and Scotland will hit low single figures. Wales and Northern Ireland can reach temperatures between 8C and 9C.
Weather maps show that a large band of rain will fall across the country on Sunday, leaving only intermittent showers until tomorrow morning.
