Extra trains, buses and free travel zone announced for 2026 shutdown

Fremantle MLA Simone McGurk said the old bridge needed to be replaced “but we recognize that doing so would bring a period of disruption for the community”.

“A free travel zone for all bus services operating along South Terrace between Douro Road and Fremantle Station and additional trains on the Fremantle line will make it easier for people to use public transport,” he said.

Iona Presentation College, St Hilda’s Anglican School and Presbyterian Ladies’ College were also selected for special school bus services due to their proximity to the Stirling Highway and the number of cars traveling to and from the schools via the Stirling Highway.

The government has yet to announce closing dates beyond February next year, but on Monday it was stated that the project is on track, with towers being placed at all four corners of the new bridge.
