Fable and Mythos: Anthropic says US lifts export ban on its advanced AI tools

The U.S. government lifted export controls on Anthropic’s most advanced artificial intelligence (AI) tools just weeks after ordering it to restrict access to them due to national security concerns, the company said.

Anthropic said in a social media post that it would begin restoring access to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 on Wednesday after being notified that the U.S. Department of Commerce had lifted export controls on the two models.

These tools, the firm’s most advanced artificial intelligence tools, were suddenly suspended on June 12 over concerns that they could be used by hackers to exploit weaknesses in computer systems.

The BBC has contacted the Department for Business for comment.

Mythos and Fable are two AI models built on Anthropic’s Claude platform; It rivals OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

Fable 5 is a version of the AI model for the consumer market that is capable of deep reasoning and can perform complex tasks independently.

Mythos 5 is a version of the platform designed for businesses and cybersecurity professionals. It is said to be able to detect vulnerabilities in computer code and exploit them.

The firm has previously said that US authorities had not identified specific concerns about its technology, although it ordered the suspension of both platforms worldwide.

“It is our understanding that the government has become aware of a method to bypass or ‘jailbreak’ Fable 5,” the company said at the time, referring to the process of bypassing software security restrictions to unblock features. he said.

“However, we disagree with the idea that a narrow finding of potential jailbreak should be a reason to recall a commercial model that has been applied to hundreds of millions of people.”
