January 8 (Reuters) – Renee Nicole Good, a Minnesota mother of three, was shot to death in her car by a federal agent in Minneapolis on Wednesday, sparking protests and a sharp debate around the circumstances surrounding her killing.

Here’s what we know about Good so far:

A COLORADO POET STUDIED IN VIRGINIA

Good graduated from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, with a degree in English in December 2020, according to a statement from the university.

He won an undergraduate poetry award, according to a 2020 Facebook post from the school’s English Department, which noted that he hails from Colorado Springs, Colorado. “When she’s not writing, reading, or talking about writing, she hosts movie marathons and creates loose works of art with her daughter and two sons,” the Facebook post said.

The Washington Post reported that Good’s daughter is 15 and her two sons are 12 and 6.

Democratic Colorado Gov. Jared Polis issued a statement Wednesday, citing reports that he is from the Colorado Springs area, and said his “thoughts are with Renee’s family, especially her young child, friends and loved ones, including those in Colorado.”

NEW IN MINNEAPOLIS

Her ex-husband, who asked to remain anonymous out of concern for the safety of their children, told The Associated Press that Good and her current partner moved to Minneapolis from Kansas City, Missouri, last year. Good and her current partner dropped their 6-year-old son off at school on Wednesday and were confronted by ICE agents on their way home, her ex-husband said.

The bio on a private Instagram account that appears to be Good’s described her as “Poet, writer, wife, mother, and shitty guitar player from Colorado living in Minneapolis, Minnesota.”

Speaking to the Minnesota Star Tribune, Good’s wife, Good’s mother, Donna Ganger, said she lives in Minneapolis.

“Renee was one of the kindest people I have ever known,” Ganger told the newspaper. “He was extremely compassionate. He took care of people throughout his life. He was loving, forgiving and compassionate. He was a wonderful person.”

FAMILY MEMBERS SAID HE WAS NOT A PROTESTER

Ganger said his daughter was “in no way a part of anything like this,” referring to protesters challenging ICE agents.

Her ex-husband said he never saw her participating in protests.
