Fake admiral admits dressing as senior navy official at Remembrance Sunday event

A man has admitted dressing as a navy admiral without permission at a Remembrance Sunday event.

Jonathan Carley, 65, of Harlech in Gwynedd, was charged with wearing uniform or dress bearing the insignia of Her Majesty’s Forces without permission.

He was arrested at his home after images of him wearing the uniform of one of the Royal Navy’s most senior ranks and a number of medals, including the Distinguished Service Order, were shared on social media.

It follows concerns raised by serving and ex-service personnel at a wreath-laying ceremony in Llandudno, North Wales.

Carley, who appeared at Llandudno Magistrates’ Court on Monday, was seen wearing Rear Admiral epaulettes and sleeve lace at the event in November, a two-star position that is one of the highest ranks in the Royal Navy.

He witnessed the march towards the war memorial before a wreath was laid by another person and then saluted at the war memorial before leaving.

Llandudno Borough Council, which organized the commemoration event, confirmed that no senior figures would attend the ceremony.
