Falklanders told ‘go back to England’ by Argentina | UK | News

Argentina’s vice-president has called on the Falklanders to “go back to England” in a misleading rant. Javier Milei’s deputy, Victoria Villarruel, said islanders who felt “English” should return “thousands of kilometers away from where their country is located”.

His misleading statement came as Argentina stepped up its claim to sovereignty over the British Overseas Territories, despite Britain winning a war in 1982. Mr. Milei’s deputy, Victoria Villarruel, wrote on social media: “Today, the Malvinas are more Argentine than ever.

“The dispute over the sovereignty of our islands is between states, so the UK must dispute the claim bilaterally with Argentina, which we maintain for legal, historical and geographical reasons.”

“Kelpers are British people living on Argentinian soil; they are not part of the debate. If they feel British, they should go back thousands of kilometers away from where their country is located.”

Argentine foreign minister Pablo Quirno responded to the reports by calling for an end to what he described as British “colonialism” and calling for bilateral talks with Britain to reach a “peaceful and definitive solution”.

Downing Street insisted the archipelago’s sovereignty was “out of question”, but the row highlighted the growing rift between Britain and the US.

The developments led President Milei to increase his claims to the archipelago. He claimed his country had done “everything humanly possible” to wrest the Falkland Islands from Britain.

“We are doing everything humanly possible to bring the Falkland Islands back into Argentinian hands,” Milei told Neura. “Sovereignty is not negotiable, but it must be done sensibly, it must be done with intelligence.”

He is also said to have poured millions into his country’s military forces, spending more than £220 million on 24 refurbished F-16 fighter jets for the Danish air force.
