Family wiped out as four-month-old baby, toddler, 4, mother, 28, and grandmother murdered in mass killing spree across Florida town

A mother and her two young children were shot dead in the street, while the father, who was initially detained nearby by police, disappeared after being released for lack of evidence.

Hailey Dempsey, 28, ran a half-mile with her 4-year-old daughter and 4-month-old baby after fleeing her home after her 55-year-old mother, Valerie Deboe, was shot to death.

Residents of West Tever Street in Plant City, near Tampa, heard gunshots around 7 a.m. Sunday and found the family in the bushes next door.

Hailey was still alive when paramedics arrived but died at the hospital. A third child was also rescued uninjured at the scene, police said.

Plant City Police later raided the family home on North Burton Street and found the body of Deboe, who suffered a single gunshot wound.

Hailey’s husband, 27-year-old Jay Dempsey, was detained nearby and his arrest was photographed by nearby residents.

However, neighbors said he was released due to lack of evidence. Police confirmed no one had been detained in connection with the murders.

Neighbor John Czarniak, who lives next to the family’s home where Deboe was found, said Dempsey and his wife got into a heated argument Friday.

Hailey called the police, who arrived at the home but left shortly after.

Later Saturday night, he saw Dempsey wearing a bulletproof vest and loading a large duffel bag into his car.

Dempsey left town after being released from custody and later deleted his social media pages.

“At 3 a.m. on Monday, he walked through the woods, got into his dead wife’s car and drove away,” Czarniak said.

Hailey was mourned by friends who said she was a great mother, and she and Dempsey were recently discussing their daughter’s birthday party.

Police have appealed for anyone with surveillance or doorbell camera footage on North Burton Street, West Tever Street or the surrounding area between 5.30am and 7am on Sunday to contact them.

‘The Plant City Police Department does not know of any credible threats at this time that would lead to the belief that there is a threat to the public,’ police said.

‘The investigation is very active; Clues and clues are sought that will allow for progress and appropriate resolution in this case.’
