Fan hops fence during red-flagged NASCAR race at San Diego’s Naval Base Coronado to meet a driver

NASCAR is in California this weekend for a street race at San Diego’s Naval Station Coronado, and one fan (thankfully red-flagged) decided to get really close to the action.

The O’Reilly Auto Parts Series hit the track for their race on Saturday and there was a lot of action going on during the race.

The biggest one came with the reboot — because we all know warnings beget warnings — and we saw Sam Mayer take an absolutely terrible blow.

The race was red flagged so crews could clean up the mess and inspect the barriers. While waiting on the track for the race to resume, Sheldon Creed, driver of the No. 00 Haas Factory Team car, unexpectedly found a friend.

One fan climbed a fence, possibly several fences, to get to Creed, chatted with him for a moment, then flew over the fence into the crowd.

And he did it all in flip-flops.

You have to give it to him. The climb in flip-flops was impressive.

Creed said on the radio that he thought his new friend was “wasted,” and let’s be honest, that’s true, too. This isn’t usually the kind of thing a sober person would do, but innocent until proven guilty. That’s what I always say!

Of course, no matter how you look at it, this is a stupid move and I don’t see this guy coming back to race this weekend or any other race.

But if this gave you a case of deja vu, then you must be a long-time NASCAR fan.

You may have heard it mentioned in the on-air clip, but in 2007 at Watkins Glen, N.Y., a fan did the same thing during a red flag to get Matt Kenseth’s autograph.

By the way, isn’t it strange that the “Car of the Future” seems obsolete now?

But, hey, this is as good a time as any to remind fans that you shouldn’t use red flags as your own temporary meet-and-greet opportunity.
