Farmers’ associations seek ₹50 lakh compensation for victims of lightning strike in Cuddalore district

The All Farmers Union Federation in Tamil Nadu has requested the State Government to provide solatium of ₹50 lakh per person to four women who died after being struck by lightning at Kaldur near Thittagudi in the district on October 16.
A decision to this effect was adopted at the association’s meeting held in Ariyanachi on Saturday.
In the resolution, the Association said that while the Government announced ₹ 10 lakh compensation to the next of kin of the victims of the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy and those killed in the Karur stampede, the compensation of ₹ 5 lakh for the lightning strike victims came as a shock to the farming community.
The compensation should be increased to ₹ 50 lakh and employment should be provided to one member from each family.
The Union also requested the Government to provide crop insurance for maize farmers in Thittakudi whose crops were damaged in 2024.
Representatives from various farmer unions led by M. Arjunan, PS Palaniappan and R. Ram Pandian attended.
