Bangladesh Situation Volatile, Security Threat To Indian Missions: Experts | India News

Unrest in Bangladesh: According to foreign policy experts and former diplomats, the political and security situation in Bangladesh remains highly volatile, raising serious concerns about the security of Indian diplomatic missions in the country. Former Indian Ambassador to Bangladesh Veena Sikri drew attention to the increasing instability following the murder of Inqilab Manch leader Osman Hadi; This development has deepened internal divisions in Bangladesh’s political environment. He noted that Hadi’s death initially led to accusations against India, but the Bangladesh government has since been forced to backtrack.

Sikri said, “Immediately after the shooting of Osman Hadi, the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs called our High Commissioner in Dhaka and claimed that India was involved in the incident and that the accused fled to India. We protested strongly,” and added: “Now the Bangladesh government has accepted that India was not involved in the incident.”

He added that the situation had worsened as tensions between the Inqilab Manch and the Younis-led interim regime increased, with the group threatening to withdraw support and even demanding resignation. “Volatility is increasing in Bangladesh,” Sikri warned, underlining the risk of further unrest.

In this environment, the Bangladesh High Commission temporarily suspended visa and consular services for Indian citizens, citing security concerns. Foreign Affairs expert Sushant Sareen said the move reflected a “clear and present security threat” to Indian missions in Bangladesh.

“The suspension of Indian visa services was due to security reasons,” Sareen said. “Bangladesh police and authorities have admitted that they cannot control gangs if they turn violent. This shows the level of risk faced by Indian missions.”

Sareen refused to draw comparisons with India’s response, calling Bangladesh’s actions “disingenuous”. “No authority in India has said they cannot control the gangs. This appears to be a tit-for-tat response similar to tactics often seen in Pakistan,” he said.

According to Sareen, India’s concerns were legitimate and rooted in reliable intelligence and facts. “There was real concern that Indian missions could be attacked. The suspension of services was a precautionary step and not a political gesture,” he added.

Experts agree that the security situation of foreign diplomatic missions (especially India’s) will remain fragile unless stability is restored and political tensions ease. At a time when internal divisions are widening and public anger is rising, Bangladesh faces a critical test in maintaining law, order and diplomatic confidence in the coming days.
