FBI reports violent crime, murder fell at highest rate since 1937 in US

According to the FBI, violent crimes fell in the United States from 2024 to 2025; Homicides fell more than 18%, and other major categories experienced declines not seen in nearly a century.
The figures were part of the FBI’s preliminary annual crime trends figures titled “First Look: 2025 Crime Data.” The bureau said these figures provide a quicker, “early look” at annual crime trends before the final, comprehensive “Crime in the Nation” report is released later in the year.
The report showed that in addition to the decrease in murders, there was also a 7 percent decrease in rapes and aggravated assaults, along with robberies, which fell by an estimated 18.5 percent.
“The 2025 crime data in this report show the largest declines in violent crime and murders since 1937, as well as large declines in aggravated assault, rape and robbery,” FBI Director Kash Patel said in a statement. he said.

Property crimes, which include burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft and arson, fell by an estimated 12.4%, the FBI said. The FBI said in this year’s report that it used data shared by about 17,075 law enforcement agencies across the U.S. (2.4% more than last year), accounting for about 96% of U.S. residents.

The report revealed that 64 police officers were killed in the line of duty in 2024, and 53 police officers were killed in 2025. The FBI stated that more than 90,000 people were attacked and 28 were accidentally killed.
Meanwhile, approximately 414,000 people were arrested for violent crimes and 868,000 for property crimes. The FBI recorded that a murder occurs every 37.3 minutes and a violent crime occurs every 28.2 seconds in the United States.
Meanwhile, a quarterly report by the Association of Major City Chiefs said violent crime is down in major U.S. cities in the first months of 2026.

Data collected from 67 responding U.S. law enforcement agencies found a 17.7% drop in homicides and a 20.4% drop in robberies from Jan. 1 to March 31. Some of the agencies include police departments in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City and Philadelphia.
