Fiery fatal crash in Delaware County involving 12 vehicles closed I-71 for hours

DELAWARE, Ohio (WCMH) — Both sides of Interstate 71 are closed Saturday night due to a fatal multi-vehicle crash on US-36/SR-37.
The crash occurred at 6:27 p.m. and involved 12 vehicles, including a semi-truck, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Three people at the scene were taken to hospitals, and OSHP said the crash was fatal but did not say how many people died.
Driver Carissa Shaw, who witnessed the accident, said that the incident was incredible.

“I saw the semi on the other side going northbound. I saw it hit the vehicles and come into the median to my right. And immediately flames shot into the air. It was one of those moments where it was like slow motion and you think, ‘Am I seeing what I’m seeing?'” Shaw said. “People ran to the red vehicle to my right and tried to help, but the driver’s side was completely crushed.”
The area where the crash occurred is currently under construction for the Sunbury Parkway interchange project. The Ohio Department of Transportation said the crash investigation will provide insight into what role construction played in the crash.
