Team Finland made Olympic history by beating Team Italy 11-0 at the Santagiulia Arena in Milan on Saturday.

Finland’s 11 goals and 62 shots set Olympic records for goals scored in a single game during the era of player participation in the NHL’s men’s hockey tournament.

The 11-goal margin of victory is also an Olympic record.

Fourteen different players scored two goals each, while 14 different players scored a point in Finland. Kaapo Kakko, Mikael Granlund, Sebastian Aho and Joel Kiviranta found the back of the net twice in the team’s win over the host country.

This was Finland’s second consecutive game after defeating Sweden 4-1 on Friday. Goaltender Juuse Saros played in both back-to-back games and made 15 saves in Saturday’s win.

Italian goalkeeper Damian Clara made 34 saves in the first two periods, while Davide Fadani made 21 saves in the third period to relieve Clara.

Finland’s victory means Team Slovakia wins Group B and automatically advances to the quarter-finals. Slovakia, Finland and Sweden had the same record but Slovakia won the group due to superior goal difference.

With the help of the 11 goals they scored on Saturday, Finland can advance to the quarter-finals from the 4th place by winning the only wild card, as the goal difference breaks the tie. Where it ends depends on Sunday’s results.

Finland’s historic victory against Italy also dealt a crushing blow to Sweden. Sweden, who lost 5-3 to Slovakia on Saturday, cannot move higher than seventh place after Finland’s win, which ensures that Sweden will play in the qualifying round on Tuesday.
