FIR against former CM Mamata Banerjee over alleged communal remarks in Bengal

A first information report (FIR) has been registered against former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee for allegedly making provocative and social statements during the last Assembly election campaign, a senior police officer said on Friday (June 12, 2026). At a rally, Ms. Banerjee allegedly told a minority community that their security depended on her political presence, without which they would be destroyed.

“It is a Zero FIR lodged on June 7. It was initially lodged at Netaji Nagar police station based on a complaint lodged by one Tushar Kanti Das (45). However, the case was later transferred to Hare Street police station,” the officer said.

Mr. Das, in his complaint, alleged that during a protest against the special intensive revision (SIR) exercise at Dharna Mancha in Esplanade on March 9, Ms. Banerjee made a misleading speech on criminal intimidation, aimed at inciting breach of peace affecting public tranquility, social harmony and democratic structure of the State.

‘The security of minorities depends on TMC’

He alleged that during the rally, Ms. Banerjee addressed a particular minority community and said that their security depended on her political presence. “Aamra achhi bole apnara bhalo achhen sobai. If you do not want to destroy yourself, do not listen to the misleading promises of the BJP), Ms. Banerjee said at the rally, according to Mr. Das’s complaint.

This statement at first glance It appeared to be provocative, provocative and capable of promoting communal disharmony, fear, hatred, misunderstanding and tension between different communities, the FIR said.

‘It can provoke social emotions’

“The statement may reasonably be perceived as creating anxiety and insecurity in the minds of ordinary citizens and, if left unchecked, may adversely affect public peace, social harmony and the democratic atmosphere of the State. I respectfully submit that speech or statements which may incite social emotions, spread fear or disrupt harmony among different groups are contrary to the spirit of the Constitution of India and may attract relevant statutory provisions,” Mr. Das insisted in the FIR.

The case was filed under Sections 96(1), 351(2) and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Another FIR was lodged against Ms. Banerjee on May 27 for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Sanatan Dharma while attending a Holi celebration in Kolkata last year. In this complaint filed by advocate Rinki Chatterjee Singh at Siliguri Cyber ​​Police Station, she accused the TMC president of referring to Sanatan Dharma as follows: “ganda dharma (dirty religion)”, “deeply injured the religious feelings and beliefs of millions of followers.”
