Fire engulfs service station in Fairfield

Firefighters are battling a blaze that has engulfed a service station in Sydney’s southwest, sending plumes of black smoke into the sky.

NSW Fire and Rescue said 50 firefighters responded to the blaze at the Metro Petrol station on Hamilton Road in Fairfield at around 12.40pm.

Aerial images show flames and smoke coming from the roof as firefighters struggled to control the fire, which was described as “severe”.

After 13 fire trucks arrived at the scene, the service station and surrounding buildings were evacuated.

NSW Fire and Rescue said there were no reports of injuries.

Roads were closed in all directions while firefighters fought the ongoing fire.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
