Fire on Spanish island of Mallorca kills two

Officials said that two people died and many people were injured in a fire that broke out in a house in a tourist area on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

According to the Spanish law enforcement agency, the Civil Guard, the fire broke out on the third floor of a residential building in the Magaluf area at around 5 a.m.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Citizens tried to extinguish the fire, which spread to the rest of the building, especially the upper floors, but were unsuccessful.

The flames were extinguished after about 2 hours.

Local authorities said in a statement on their website that four people remained in hospital.

It was stated that approximately 20 people were affected by the fire.

Nearby hotels will provide temporary shelter to affected residents.

The Civil Guard said that one of the dead was a 58-year-old Argentine citizen and the other was a woman whose identity has not yet been determined.

They were in two separate apartments.

The floor where the fire started was cordoned off, along with the floors immediately above and below, officials said.

A popular beach and nightlife destination among young British and German tourists, Magaluf is located on the Calvià coast, 22 km west of Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the Mediterranean archipelago.

Following the tragedy, local authorities declared two days of mourning.
