Anthony Joshua’s driver charged with dangerous driving after fatal crash in Nigeria | Anthony Joshua

Nigerian police have charged Anthony Joshua’s driver with causing death by dangerous driving following a fatal crash in which two people died.

Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was also charged with driving without a valid licence, and “driving without due care and attention, causing bodily harm and damage to property.” He will appear in court on January 20.

The Federal Road Safety Service in Nigeria said they believed the vehicle was traveling “beyond the legally prescribed speed limit”.

Kayode was driving former world heavyweight boxing champion Joshua, 36, his personal trainer Latif Ayodele and strength coach Sina Ghami on a busy highway connecting Lagos and Ibadan in southwestern Nigeria on December 29.

While the Lexus SUV was traveling at high speed and trying to overtake a vehicle, the passenger side tire burst. The Lexus crashed into a stationary truck carrying soybeans that was illegally parked on the hard shoulder of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, 30 miles from Lagos. Ayodele and Ghami, both 36 years old, died at the scene.

The 46-year-old is a long-time member of the boxer’s squad and has been released on bail of 5 million naira (£2,580) but will remain in custody until he meets bail conditions.

The driver and Joshua escaped with minor injuries but Kayode was taken to Lagoon hospital in Ikoyi and kept under observation for two days. Following the accident, Joshua and his mother paid their respects to the boxer’s friends at the funeral home.

The crash occurred 10 days after the former world champion celebrated his victory over YouTuber Jake Paul in the United States. Before the accident, it was believed that Joshua was preparing to return to the boxing ring earlier this year.

Following the crash, the Ogun state government said in a statement: “Anthony Joshua and another passenger were immediately evacuated to a private medical facility in Lagos.

“After extensive clinical evaluations, doctors confirmed that both patients are stable and do not require any immediate medical attention at this time. A full medical team has been assembled and will continue to monitor them closely.”
