Five killed at youth welfare facility in Stade
Berlin: Five people were killed in a shooting attack on a youth welfare facility in the northern German town of Stade on Monday, police said. Two people, including the suspected attacker, were detained.
Police said other people were injured but did not give numbers.
Police said the attack took place at the facility on Dankersstrasse, south of the city centre. This facility also includes temporary housing for pregnant women or young mothers with children.
Police said there was no danger to the public. Video footage of the aftermath of the shooting shows a large police presence, along with other emergency personnel and several ambulances.
Two suspects, one of whom was thought to have opened fire, were detained. Police said they were working to determine the background to the attack and what exactly happened.
Germany’s gun laws are more restrictive than those in the United States, and mass shootings are rare but not unheard of.
Stade has a population of approximately 50,000 and is located approximately 40 kilometers from Hamburg.
