Flames leap 15 metres into the air in huge factory fire

Firefighters are battling a massive factory blaze in western Sydney that could take days to extinguish.

The fire at a chemical facility in North St Marys started around 11pm, with flames rising 15 meters into the air and causing at least one explosion.

About 50 fire trucks and 200 firefighters participated in fighting the fire from three sides on Sunday morning; Hazmat units, surveillance drones and bulk water carriers also participated in the operation.

Fire crews said they were working to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings and to eliminate the environmental risks posed by chemicals in the area.

Emergency services said no injuries were reported in the fire.

Nick Andronicos from NSW Fire and Rescue told 2GB Radio the focus would be on extinguishing spot fires once the main fire was extinguished.

He said firefighters will likely “be doing some response over the next few days.”

It is unknown what caused the fire.
