Despite fears of jet fuel shortages later this year, thousands of Britons will take to the skies this spring and summer, flying to destinations around the world. With this in mind, many travel experts are sharing tips to help people have the safest and most comfortable trip possible.

One of these people is a flight attendant who posted on TikTok about the importance of one’s seating position during a flight. Flight attendant Barbiebac La Azafata warned about the possible dangers of sitting cross-legged during travel. The reason Barbiebac warns against sitting cross-legged is the risk of blood clots. According to the NHS, deep vein thrombosis is “a blood clot that forms in a vein, usually in the leg.”

In its list of things to avoid to prevent deep vein thrombosis, the NHS recommends: “Do not cross your legs when sitting.”

When it comes to travel, he recommends people drink plenty of water, avoid drinking alcohol, try to move around as much as possible and “wear loose-fitting clothing.”

In addition to avoiding sitting cross-legged, Barbiebac advised people to change positions several times, avoid placing their feet on the front seat and not sleeping against the window.

“Many passengers sit in the wrong position and complain that everything hurts. Do not cross your legs for long periods of time. This can cut off your blood circulation and there is a greater risk of thrombosis on long flights.”

“Change your position several times. Do not put your feet on the front seat. This is very unhygienic and disrespectful to other passengers.”

“Do not sleep against the window. The vibration of the plane can give you a headache, and the faces of other passengers are also very dirty. Take a pillow throughout the flight and do not recline your seat. The passenger behind you may be uncomfortable.”

Barbiebac isn’t the only flight attendant giving passengers tips on how to make their flights more comfortable; Another expert explains which chair to choose if you want to sleep.

Sherry Peters, who worked as a flight attendant for 27 years, offered advice on how to relax while traveling. He recommended passengers choose a window seat because it gives them more control over their environment.

He explained: “Being by the window gives you much more control over your surroundings, which is key to falling asleep. You can close the shade, lean against the wall for support, and avoid being elbowed by people passing in the hallway.”

“It’s one of the closest things to a controlled sleep environment on a plane. Even if you only have an hour or two, it makes a big difference.”

Sherry also recommended avoiding seats near galleys or restrooms, as these are the worst places to sleep due to the heavy foot traffic and constant movement of both passengers and crew.
