Florida building migrant detention centre in Everglades
Florida began to build an detention center called ‘Crocodile Alcatraz’ to temporarily keep immigrants on an air strip in Everglades.
The Secretary of the Ministry of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, said that the facility will be financed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which was used to provide accommodation and other assistance to unprecedented immigrants.
The plan was criticized by many deputies, including the mayor of the Miami-Pad district, which defends that it may be “destructive” environmentally.
The proposal comes while trying to give a campaign commitment to accelerate Trump’s deportation of illegal immigrants.
“Under the leadership of President Trump, we are working at turbo speed on the cost -effective and innovative ways of fulfilling the authority of the American people to deport the mass deportation of the American people.” He said.
“Thanks to our partnership with Florida, we will expand the facilities and bed space only in days.”
The facility will be built from Miami to the location of Dade-Collier Education and Transition Airport, a public airport of approximately 58km (36 miles). It will cost about $ 450 million ($ 332 million) a year to run.
In a video published in X, Florida’s Chief Prosecutor James Uthmeier called it a “almost abandoned facility”.
He said the detention center could be built within 30 to 60 days and can have an estimated 1,000 people.
He argued that he had acted as a natural deterrent for escapes.
