Foreign Influence. How the Israel lobby bought Australian democracy

No other lobby has this much power in Australia. Andrew Brown Explains how the Israel Lobby bought Australian democracy. Part One: Machines.

Australian democracy was not stolen by a single act of corruption. Over three decades it was bought out, step by step, transaction by transaction, by a foreign-connected lobbying apparatus so deeply embedded in both major parties that it no longer operated as an external pressure group.

IIt functions as an internal governance structure.

He is not petitioning Canberra. He’s making it work.

The result is a political class that cannot acknowledge genocide, cannot fulfill its own treaty obligations, and cannot pronounce the name of a man the International Criminal Court has already indicted for war crimes without first sharing it with the people who pay its bills.

This is not a failure of Australian democracy. Australian democracy is performing exactly as this lobby intended.

The Australian Jewish community has a population of approximately 120,000 people. Rough crowd of the AFL Grand Final at the MCG. Less than half a percent of the population.

Ignoring the genocide. Bill regarding Australia’s silence has been introduced

What the lobby has built around this community has distorted the foreign policy of a G20 country, sacking cabinet ministers who crossed the line, criminalizing protests, cutting funding for arts festivals, directing police against peaceful demonstrators, and dismantling publicly funded protection and political respect.

There is no other community of this size in the history of this country.

It’s been close so far. The disproportion is not accidental. That’s what matters. Such concentrated power does not accumulate by chance.

Leibler, Rubenstein and Israel demonstrations

The locomotive of the operation is AIJAC, Australia/Israel and the Council for Jewish Affairs. The executive director is Colin Rubenstein. Its president, Mark Leibler, has been at the center of organized pro-Israel influence in Australian politics for four decades, operating with a discipline and consistency unmatched by most political parties.

The Executive Council of Australian Jews, the Zionist Federation of Australia and the state’s Jewish Board of Representatives form a coordinated network around this council.

All together, they constitute the most effective foreign influence operation ever conducted on Australian soil.

Analysis of parliamentary benefits registers found AIJAC was the largest private provider of all-expenses-paid overseas trips to federal MPs over a four-year period. Since 2002, more than 500 politicians, journalists and high-ranking public officials have flown to Israel on private tours.

These are not training programs. These are conditioning exercises.

Lawmakers return pre-loaded with validated arguments and their personal stakes in the narrative they have been tasked to defend.

Bob Carr stands apart

Bob Carr was Australia’s foreign minister. He wrote things that everyone in that office knew and were too caught up in saying.

He noted that Australian foreign policy had been handed over to Jewish donors.

Kevin Rudd has revealed that nearly a fifth of the funds he raised in the 2007 federal election came from Jewish community leaders. When Carr made a routine statement against Israeli settlements in the West Bank, a prime ministerial adviser instructed him to meet with the community and rectify the situation.

Australia’s foreign minister, guided by a network of donors operating through the prime minister’s office, is asking Carr to abandon his statement of established international law.

Not asked. Director.

His colleagues would not resist. The architecture of harmony was too comprehensively built for this. In Labor, as in the Coalition, the price of cooperation is paid up front, and the price of independence is paid for the rest of your career.

distributed

Look at what this lobby has achieved from Australian governments that no other community of any size has ever achieved. By 2024, before the Bondi Beach Hanukkah massacre, federal, state and local governments had allocated more than $164 million to the security of the Jewish community.

There are armed guards in front of synagogues at all hours of the day. Special police were permanently assigned to Jewish schools. A national security infrastructure tailor-made for a population the size of a football crowd.

It has been documented that Australian Muslims face rates of religiously motivated violence that dwarf anything recorded against the Jewish community. They received nothing comparable. Aboriginal communities received nothing.

No other group in this country has even come close to this regulation.

After Bondi, the money accelerated even more. The political mechanism that produced this was never once asked to justify itself, because the people who should be asking the question are the same people who set up this mechanism.

Jillian Segal and The Plan

There is also a Special Envoy for Combating Anti-Semitism. Her name is Jillian Segal. He is a former chairman of the Executive Council of Australian Jews and chaired the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce until March 2025. Before his appointment, he signed a statement condemning foreign minister Penny Wong’s call for Israel to stop attacking hospitals.

Within a year of taking over, he drew up a 13-point plan that proposed making him a watchdog of Australian media organisations; It had the power to recommend cuts to public funding for universities, broadcasters, cultural festivals and any other institution deemed not to be taking action against antisemitism.

It necessitated the adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism, which deliberately combines criticism of Israel with hatred of the Jewish people. His office has since published a handbook that clearly states that antisemitism and anti-Zionism are the same thing, and that calling Israel an apartheid state or accusing it of genocide constitutes antisemitism.

According to this framework adopted by the Australian government, naming something for which the ICC has already found evidence is a hate crime.

The envoy’s target is not Jew hatred. This is the legal and moral responsibility of a foreign government.

Months later, an Islamophobia envoy was eventually appointed as well, after the antisemitism appointment was finalized and many people reportedly turned down the role. The sequence is the message.

The ambassador of Islamophobia has no plans to control the media. There is no authority to allocate resources to universities. There is no Royal Commission. There is no $164 million security infrastructure. There is no prime minister who legislates in his name.

When 15 people were killed at the Hanukkah celebration held at Bondi Beach on December 14, 2025, Albanese announced the establishment of a Royal Commission within weeks. Its final report will be published on the exact date of the first anniversary of the massacre.

Every week in Australia, two women are killed by their partner or family member. Every eight weeks this death toll amounts to another Bondi massacre. Australia has never established a national Royal Commission into domestic violence.

Not once.

The most powerful tool of public inquiry this government has was used for 15 deaths in one month. It was never applied to women collecting the same fee every two months each year, as there was no lobby room in the Houses of Parliament with their photographs hanging on the walls.

This is what thirty years of purchased compliance looks like when the bills are due. Tomorrow: How the lobby implements it.

Antisemitism Act. Same shirt. Different stairs. Years of imprisonment.
