Actress Ranya Rao Jailed Under COFEPOSA in Gold Smuggling Case; No Bail Allowed

Kannada film actor Ranya Rao was sentenced to one -year imprisonment under a tight Cofeposa in connection with a golden smuggling case. The Advisory Board, which deals with the issue of the Law on Foreign Currency Protection and Smuggling Activities (Cofeposa), has recently decided that RAO’s detention will not be guaranteed during its entire time.

RAO, previously accused by a City Court on May 20, together with the Tarun Raju, the Intelligence Directorate (DRI) was able to give a chargeset file in a legally compulsory time period.

Although RS 2 Lakh bonds and bail conditions were given, both Rania and Tarun continued to be detained due to the preventive detention order under Cofeposa, which allowed to be detained for up to a year without official charges, based on suspicion of smuggling activities.

In March, Rania Rao came from Dubai and tried to cross the green channel of the International Airport, which is usually reserved for useless passengers.

He seemed anxious when he was questioned by the DRI officials about whether there were any notified goods. The suspicious behavior pushed the authorities to make a detailed search by female civil servants.

A total of 14.2 kilograms of gold worth approximately 12.56 Crore were recovered from it and was immediately detained. Rania’s previous bail applications were rejected twice by the local courts and then by the Supreme Court of Karnataka.
