Huge boost for UK seaside town as incredible swimming pool set to open | UK | News

Plans have been announced to build an incredible outdoor swimming pool next to the beach in a historic seaside town in England. Plans include turning a seaside council car park into a giant swimming pool.
The Marina Swimming Pool in Ramsgate, Kent, opened in 1935 but closed in 1975 due to structural problems. But the lido may now be making a comeback, with Heritage Lab announcing it is in “early discussions with an experienced developer” to build an outdoor pool complex at the Marina Esplanade Car Park.
As reported by SunThe Marina Swimming Pool, which includes an Olympic-sized pool and diving area, was open for 40 years before being replaced by a car park. The new area may also include saunas, cafes and social areas to ensure it can be used all year round.
A Heritage Lab spokesperson said: “Thanet has a thriving sea and open water swimming culture, with people of all ages swimming year-round for health and connection.
“Outdoor swimming is no longer a niche, it’s a movement. Pair this with saunas, cafés or social spaces and you can create something truly special: a year-round destination for locals and visitors alike. Public interest over the past 24 hours has been extremely encouraging.”
Many people reacted to the news on social media. Many agree that a new port would be a welcome addition to the city.
One person said on Facebook: “This is a great idea; put our outdoor pool back.” The second added: “Ramsgate is a special place and deserves a swimming pool.”
A third wrote: “Would be great for the area, can’t say I’ve ever seen the car park used to its full capacity, what a great use of the space. This is definitely in line with the current culture of outdoor swimming which promotes wellbeing and health for mind and body.”
A fourth said: “Great idea, just what Ramsgate needs!” A fifth agreed: “That would be great.”
The plans include a complex consisting of a large pool and two smaller pools. There is also outdoor seating and a three-story building.
Last June Heritage Lab announced plans to transform eight Art Deco shelters on Ramsgate’s East Escarpment. Plans include the creation of water sports facilities, a sauna and a food and beverage outlet.
