Prominent Labor figure Tim Picton critical after alleged assault in Perth

The family of a former Labor strategist who helped lead his party to a landslide election victory are rallying around him as he fights for his life following an alleged attack.
Tim Picton was found unconscious outside a licensed premises in Perth at around 5.30am on Saturday after Western Australian police received reports of a disturbance.
Police said the 36-year-old was attacked and fell, hitting his head on the pavement.
Mr Picton was taken to the Royal Perth Hospital with serious and life-threatening injuries and remains in a critical condition.
A 20-year-old man from Lesmurdie has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm.
He was refused bail and was expected to appear before Perth Magistrates Court on Sunday.
Mr Picton’s family thanked medical staff and police for their professionalism and support, as well as friends and colleagues for their compassion during an “incredibly difficult time”.
“As a family, we are completely focused on being there for him and supporting each other,” the family said in a statement. he said.
“Tim is a much-loved father, husband, brother and son, as well as a friend to many across Australia.”
The former political strategist played a key role in leading WA Labor to a 2021 election victory that saw the opposition Liberal party hold on for just two seats.
He is also the brother of South Australian Health Minister Chris Picton.
South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas said he spoke to his minister and conveyed his thoughts to the family.
“It is difficult to know exactly what happened to Mr Picton’s brother in these early stages, but he is unwell and his condition is serious,” Mr Malinauskas said on Sunday.
“My thoughts are with Mr. Picton, Chris and his beautiful family.”
Tim Picton worked as an adviser to Senator Don Farrell during the Gillard government, then worked in former Victorian premier Daniel Andrews’ office before running WA Labor’s 2021 campaign.
He has since served as director of strategy at mining company Mineral Resources.
