Former Radio 1 DJ in court on rape charges

Former BBC Radio 1 and ex-Capital Xtra DJ Tim Westwood appeared in court for his first hearing since being charged with four counts of rape last month.

The 68-year-old man is also charged with nine counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual assault. Three of the indecent assaults are alleged to have taken place at BBC studios in the 1990s.

The charges against the seven women, some as young as 17, spanned from 1983 to 2016.

Mr Westwood was granted bail at a hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday. He has not yet been asked to enter a defense, but has previously denied allegations of misconduct.

Wearing a dark gray shirt at the hearing, he spoke to confirm his full name, address and date of birth.

He was released on bail on the condition that he not contact prosecution witnesses.

His case will next be heard at Southwark Crown Court on December 8.
