Former special counsel Robert Mueller dies at 81

Former special counsel Robert Mueller, who investigated Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election, died on Friday.

Mueller, who was also the former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, was 81 years old.

“It is with deep sadness that we share the news of Bob’s passing on Friday night,” his family said in a statement on Saturday. “The family requests that their privacy be respected.”

Mueller concluded in 2019 that Russia interfered with the election to influence voters against President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign.

The Russia investigation, and Mueller himself, quickly became a lightning rod for Trump, who has repeatedly called the investigation a “witch hunt” and a “hoax” over the years.

Shortly after Mueller’s death was reported, Trump released a statement: Real Social post“Good, I’m glad you’re dead.”

He added: “He can’t hurt innocent people anymore!”
